Each Saturday, we're featuring a different small business owner or content creator! Getting our content, products, and voices out there to the world can be tough, so creating an inclusive and supportive community is incredibly important. As a small business owner myself, lending a helping hand to others is a key part of our business plan - we want to give back to the community that has been so key to our success!

Our ninth installment is with Jessica at Outerspace Outpost who creates amazing fandom-based apparel and accessories!

Tell us a little bit about yourself (anything you're comfortable with, like where you're from)!

I have always been a coastal person, born and raised in California before running off to Maine (which may be seeing a return soon), and now I'm in Las Vegas, I needed a break from the snow! I've always been in love with space, the idea of exploration and discovery has really driven my love of sci-fi and fantasy. I studied archeology and biological sciences through college, I really just wanted to be Indiana Jones when I grew up, I think there's still time. I'm all about being friendly and welcoming, in fandom places especially, so I will always be a friendly face in the fandom shop world!

What are your favorite fandoms?

Star Wars, Marvel, Tolkien

When and why did you start your business?

It was something I had always wanted to do, and like many others I lost my job early on in the pandemic and that opened the door to take the dive. I really just love to create, and it's a million times better if what I create makes someone happy and helps them enjoy something they already love.

Talk us through a little bit about your creative process and your products.

My creative process is a bit chaotic. There are a lot of post it notes, half finished sketches, drawers of supplies, and those all wait for that aha moment when I get really excited to make things. These days I'm really apparel focused, lots of tees and other casual clothing. I will be expanding more into my own designs of accessories and clothing, and I cannot wait to share more of that with everyone!

Where do sell your products?

I'm in the midst of getting things switched from etsy to shopify, the bulk of my business is done through, and that will always take you to the proper site. 2022 will also be the year I expand to the convention circuit as well.

What have been some of the lessons (both good and bad) that you've learned since you started your business?

The biggest one is that I cannot do nearly the amount of things in a day that I think I can, which has taught me to be more careful about overextending myself. That leads to a good lesson though, that people in general are so supportive and it's amazing to have a community on Instagram that gets excited to share ideas and have fun with our shops.

What has been your favorite product to create and why?

Though a general answer, I really love creating the hand dyed and tie dyed tees. Working with that medium is always a bit unpredictable and seeing the patterns and colors emerge is magical every time.

What is your favorite fandom to work on?

Definitely Star Wars, especially the animated series'.

What has been the most popular product you've created?

Gosh, probably the Captain Rex shorts. I was definitely not prepared for how well received those would be!

What is one product you've created you wish got a little more love?

Maybe the BD-1 tee? That was my first tee I made after learning a new technique so I loved being able to translate a pencil sketch into a tee.

What is your favorite social media platform to use and why?

Instagram, for me it's a very low pressure way to interact with people. I find social media really stressful so having a place that is full of supportive people is really important.

Where else can we find you on social media?

Tiktok - @outerspaceoutpost

Is there anything else we should know about you or your business?

There are a lot of exciting new things coming! I'm obsessed with customs and commissions, so never be afraid to come to me with an off the wall idea, we'll make it happen!

Make sure to give Jessica a follow on Instagram and all of her other social media accounts, as well as visiting her shop!
